Gary Joel Gabriel, born and raised in Washington, DC, is an educator, blogger, musician and writer.
Active in various endeavors, Gabriel has worked consistently in education for over two decades. Primarily employed in the nonprofit sector, Gabriel has held education positions with several prominent New York City community-based organizations such as Harlem Children’s Zone, Harlem Center for Education, Figure Skating in Harlem, Goodwill Industries and was a consultant to the New York City Department of Education. Gabriel has also written, directed and produced numerous plays staged primarily in Harlem theaters. These productions have featured internationally recognized French-Canadian actress/singer Myriam Phiro (A Very Dangerous Game), Audelco award winner Reginald L. Wilson (Twisted) and Kelvin Hale (Revival) who has appeared in feature films and in the TV series Power.
Gabriel was born into a musical family and attended elementary and middle school in Virginia and high school in the District of Columbia.
In 1976 Gabriel started playing electric bass and studied at the studio of noted DC blues guitarist Bill Harris. Gabriel was inspired by musicians in his neighborhood, along with the funk, R & B, jazz fusion and progressive rock bands of the era. Although, he was primarily influenced by bass players. These include: Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorious and Chris Squire. Gabriel also studied cello with the DC Youth Orchestra before joining the punk rock band The Enzymes. (He was bandmates with David Byers and Chris Haskett.) Gabriel was interviewed about the punk rock scene in DC and appears in the 2019 documentary Punk The Capital. He also attended Berklee College of Music for a year.
After moving to Harlem in the 1990s, Gabriel participated in jam sessions and performed with local musicians.
Gabriel started writing for local newsletters and newspapers as an undergraduate at the University of the District of Columbia. Eventually this would include fiction and non-fiction writing. While a graduate student at The City College of New York, Gabriel was part of the poetry outreach program (to public schools) and published poems in the English Department’s annual anthology, Poetry In Performance, during the years 2005 – 2015. (This series also includes his noteworthy poem History.) Gabriel has also published several books. In 2018 Gabriel was one of 300 New York City finalists to receive a Neighborhood grant.

A fitness enthusiast, Gabriel was first taken to a DC weightlifting gym by his mother in 1975. Gabriel has continued to workout over the years and included various boxing techniques and martial arts forms. Gabriel is also an avid reader and builder of kit models.
Gabriel has published several books in the urban genre under a pseudonym. He also started journaling in the 1990s and has amassed nearly 100 volumes. Additionally, he is one of the founders of A&G Business Solutions, A&G Creations Publishing, and A&G Press. Gabriel joined Little Learners Press in 2022.
Gabriel is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia (BA, English) and The City College of New York (MA, Creative Writing), where Emily Raboteau was his thesis advisor. Gabriel has also been coached by esteemed author Marita Golden.
Since moving to Florida, Gabriel publishes regularly and remains active in education.
